Beating the Heat

What a summer! And I’m talking about the heat. It seems like our summers have gotten hotter, in general. Is it just me?! I always say that the really hot days are still too few to justify installing an air conditioning unit in our home. Except that those really hot days are increasing in frequency and temperature, and I’m about ready to bid our fans adieu, and just go for the real deal. I blame a few things for this (my Mediterranean-living, heat-loving friends and family are rolling their eyes right now, I just know it!). One: I think it comes with age. I not only have become less tolerant of heat, but I physically can’t handle it like I used to in my 20s. Gone are the days where I could spend hour after hour being a slave to the sun. I get the shakes, I get weak, and I turn into a big mess if I don’t have a hat, a bottle of water and some shade nearby. Sigh. Two: 95% of my day is now spent running after and keeping up with my two young girls. My pre-kid self might relish in these soaring temperatures a bit more. But kid wrangling and +30 degrees…I’m sweating just thinking about it.

Bottom line: I love summer, I really do. I just love it with cold water and even colder decaf, iced Americanos. Here’s what we’ve been up to and how we’re beating the heat:

A Rocky Mountain getaway back in June. That cool, mountain air was welcomed with open arms.

Lots of lake walks, refreshing slurpees every once in a while, and playing tour guide for my cousin who recently visited from North Carolina

I have also made it my goal to experiment with some different dinner recipes to limit my oven use on the exceptionally scorching days. So far, I’ve tried these summer rolls (a new family hit!) and a summer vegetable soup (very similar to this recipe).

Hope you’re enjoying the summer! Tell me about the ways your beating the heat and any tasty, summer dinner recipes you love 🙂

Mother’s Day

Motherhood has been, and continues to be, the most beautiful and incredible ride. It’s fun, it’s fulfilling, it’s feeling and expressing a love you didn’t quite know existed, and it requires you to develop a thick skin pretty quickly in order to roll with the learning curves along the way. This Mother’s Day, my wishlist consists of things that are totally basic and simple, but are tied to the experiences I enjoy and look forward to having more of with my little family. Below is a round up of every day things, but things that take on new meaning once you become a mom.

Clockwise L to R: Oversized vegan weekender, Explore Alberta HoodieNike Juvenate, Signature home scent, Sugared & Spiced cake, Mug, Love Fresh lotion

Packing up and running off with my family for a few days is what my dreams are made of, especially as life gets busier and we get caught in the day-to-day of things. Everything I would need for a mountain getaway, tossed into this beautiful weekender bag, and off we go!

A mountain getaway needs this Explore Alberta hoodie. It’s casual and cute and just what I need to run around with my girls (also makes me feel Alberta proud)

As the girls get older and more active, I look forward to keeping pace right there with them. Why not do it in a pair of cute kicks?!

I love a signature scent for my family to associate with a warm and cozy home. This Capri Blue candle from Anthropologie is perfection.

The sweet tooth runs strong in this family. And just look at this cake…need I say more?!

Coffee is a necessary treat that I look forward to each day, and I absolutely love this mug that my dear friend, Justine Ma, designed with another sweet and talented gal, Miss Chrissy Charms.

By the end of each day, my hands are in need of some beautifully scented TLC, and this Lavender lotion from Love Fresh is just what my skin needs and loves.

Wishing a very happy Mother’s Day weekend to all of the moms and moms-to-be, and especially to my favourite – my own mom ❤

Woman Crush Wednesday: Olivia Wilde

Helloooooo! Or maybe I should rephrase that to “hello?” Anyone there? It’s been a while (sorry!), but I’m back and excited to reconnect with each of you. In my last post I talked about how I was starting some contract work from home, which has been all sorts of wonderful. I just wrapped up a project that was really fun and packed with learning, and perhaps the biggest lesson I took away was that of balance and ensuring I give proper attention to everything on my plate at any given time. I’m really grateful for opportunities like these because such lessons are something I will face at one point or another, so I always prefer to embrace them sooner than later. And the learning – my hungry brain does a happy dance with each new task I take on!

I thought it would be fun to come back with a #wcw, or Woman Crush Wednesday post. One where I talk about the big lady crush I have on this gal right here:

Olivia Wilde is someone I admire for a lot of reasons – her talent, style, wit and humor are but a few of them. She recently joined the ranks of motherhood, too, and I just loved her take on her post-baby body in the April issue of Shape Magazine. It can be an intense battle when you combine your own insecurities and the societal pressures of what women should look like after growing a human! But she comes along and casually injects these bits of hilarity that bring everything back to reality again. Bottom line for any woman nitpicking each part of their unique selves (myself included) – love the evidence of bringing a child into the world and have fun while getting in shape. And if you so choose, make like Olivia and dance your butt off!

Which woman are you crushing on?

Olivia has made a linked appearance on here before, on turning 30

Inspired || How’s My Down Dog?

In light of my recent giveaway with Sandy, I thought this would be a good opportunity to begin, yet, another series where I feature cool people doing cool things all on their own. There is so much of this that goes on under the radar, why not spread the word as best as you can?! Here’s a little more about Sandy, how she got the idea for the yoga tanks, and a little more about her fabulous self!

Tell us a bit more about these cool tanks. How did you get started and why?

The idea for the shirts is inspired by my yoga teacher – Jeff Mah. His classes really focus on the foundation of yoga poses and how to refine your practice to avoid long term injury. We spend a lot of time in class talking about the foundation of downdog. So, while in downdog one day, I thought it would be cute to print “how’s my downdog?” on a shirt, like “how’s my driving?”. Then I started giggling to myself and people stared…

Has yoga always played a role in your life? If not, what is it that keeps you going and loving it?

I started practising yoga (seriously) about 5 years ago. Depending on where I’m at in life, I practice anywhere from one to five times a week.

I love yoga because you can really craft your practice to make it work for you. For instance, I was training for a leg of the Canadian Death Race with my sister this year, so instead of my normal Vinyasa/power flow practice I opted for Yin or Restorative.

It’s also a major challenge and never gets stale. There’s always a something new to learn, whether it be a new pose or how to get your hamstrings to stop feeling like they’re going to snap like a twig (I’m still working on this).

You balance this, plus your day job as Principal at Bassett Digital Consulting. Any tips or tricks to making it all happen so smoothly?

If you have the luxury of working for yourself from home, I would suggest that … You don’t have to wear pants!

Seriously though, it’s a matter of prioritizing. What are you going to do today that will help you achieve your goals? Then sort out what needs to get done and what can wait.

Also, don’t over extend yourself, be realistic, and manage expectations. I have worked in a project management capacity for many years so I am able to set fairly realistic deadlines for projects that I’m working on.

Favourite spots to do yoga in Calgary and in Edmonton?

Calgary – One More Breath (see jeffmah.com for more details on where and when), Bodhi Tree, Yoga Mandala

Edmonton – Moksha Yoga (go see Meghan Butler), Noorish Yoga in Garneau

If you’re ever in Canmore check out the Yoga Lounge

Favourite indulgence?

Cheese, wine and beer.

I actually read a book about cheese mongering once, called “Living Life on the Wedge”

Best piece of advice for someone looking to start yoga, or take their practice to a more serious level?

For someone wanting to start I would suggest a yoga sampler. Try a bunch of classes and different studios. See what you like and what you don’t like. It’s fairly cost effective to check out new studios. Most intro passes will get you an unlimited week or month for pretty cheap. Know that there is a yoga out there for almost anyone, you just have to find your sweet spot.

Also, don’t get discouraged. It’s called a yoga “practice” for a reason. Some poses will come naturally and some will not. If you keep at it and practice regularly, you’ll be amazed at your progress. I know people who, when they started, weren’t able to touch their toes and now they’re in full hanumanasana (full splits).

Let’s all try and say hanumanasana three times fast! It was so fun working with you, Sandy, and getting a bit more of an inside scoop on how this all came to be! And for you, dear readers, don’t forget you still have a few days left to enter for a chance to win one of these yoga tanks. Just follow the link below to enter your information:
